Woman pinned under TTC bus at Royal York Station dies: police

One woman has died after police say that she was pinned underneath a bus at a TTC station in Toronto’s west end on Monday afternoon.

It happened in the bus bay area at Royal York Station just before 1:20 p.m.

At this point, it it not clear how the woman ended up pinned underneath the vehicle.

Police say that they are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the bus bay area.

“As of right now we are still very early in the investigation and we are continuing to find out exactly what occurred,” Insp. Errol Watson told reporters at the scene. “We understand that this incident can be very traumatic for anyone who was involved or witnessed what happened. Please contact us and we can get you in contact with our victim services offices.”

Police have not publicly identified the victim at this point and Watson said that officers are still working to notify next-of-kin.

Royal York Station, meanwhile, is currently closed and trains are bypassing the station.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali said the transit commission is “heartbroken” by the incident.

“We are working closely with the Toronto Police Service as they investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” Lali said. “The safety of our customers, employees, and the public is our highest priority, and we are committed to fully supporting the investigation.”

Regular service resumed Royal York Station shortly after 4:30 p.m.
